We often furget that our doggos are not so far departed from the wild animals that inhabit our planet. And that some doggos still very much have an active prey drive, which brings us to the story at hand in which that very same drive ended up taking a pupper on a surprise sprint into the inky blackness of the British Columbia night.

Reddit's r/dogs subreddit is full of sweet, silly and strange stories about peoples' puppers. But this story stood out to us as it has all the drama of a lost dog story with the heartmelting moment of a rescue dog story. Our tale begins with a bit of background on the pupper in question who turns out to be quite the runner who enjoys long sprints going after prey in the wild. He had been known for taking multiple hour treks off his own accord. Of course he did not take kindly to being caught and would make it almost impossible to apprehend him, that is until he grew too tired to keep running.

But his most recent escape was not like the rest, this one happened at night, causing his pitch black body to instantly disappear into the depth of the darkness. A terrifying place to find yourself as a pawrent, but luckily this time would not end in tears, at least not sad ones.

Holy guacamole, that is much much more than a simple handful. That is the truckload if not more. Having your dog on the lam for three hours, when you know that they are locked into their prey drive and unaware of other dangers, must be terrifying. It is almost as though the pupper you have come to love turns into some sort of monster who responds to nothing, and cares for nothing other than the thrill of the chase. All the while your heart is in your mouth as their pawrent, hoping that the sweet doggo you know and love is still inside the beast that is currently snarling and slobbering while chasing after its victim.

Yeah, we can see why a hot chocolate would be necessary. After having this kind of thing happen multiple times and it being dark, your nerves would be more than in need of some settling. Heck, just the hour and a half search must have been entirely heartwrenching. Each corner you turn fills you with a sense of dread, in some place you hope to find your dog laying somewhere, so at least you know they are no longer in pain. Each step you take filled with regret that you might have been able to have done something to stop them but didn't. It is a heavy burden to bear.
